March 2007 marks the 88th year since the American Legion was founded in Paris, France. Its purpose was to provide services to our veterans, their families and their communities. Of all the veterans' organizations, none has grown so large or exercised as much influence as the American Legion. The mission today is the same as it was in 1919: to support families, communities, State and Nation. Our strength comes from our membership. Without members there would be no voice on Capitol Hill. We would not be able to achieve the entitlements and support to our veterans, their families , their communities, our State and Nation. Membership in a small post is important. I would encourage all eligible veterans to become members of of the American Legion. It's not what you pay to belong to the American Legion, it's what you paid to be eligible. Get involved. As veterans we should be obligated to continue serving our country.
